Collecting is an irrepressible need for certain people. Their behaviour cannot be explained exclusively as a psychological phenomenon nor dismissed into facile categories—all of which inevitably reduce the idea of collecting art to a mere manifestation of an individual’s wealth and power. The motives of art collectors are certainly much more diverse and nuanced; they can be part of a search for identity, a means of expressing a personal aesthetic and a passionate obsession. The double-barreled exhibition currently on at the Ilona-K artspace presents the private collections of Stella Kesaeva and Viatcheslav Pivovarov to the public. The Kesaeva collection focuses on conceptual art, on works that share a singular aesthetic rhythm. The pieces in the Pivovarov collection are full of passion and life-enhancing power, and they reflect a persistent search for meaning in a world filled with chaos. The collections reflect two very different views of the world; together, they invite visitors to take a new look at the works on display and to learn more about how things line up in the world of contemporary art.
